Lot 1 originally contained the farmhouse
adjacent to the Kaikout Kill, whose cellar floor was discovered
in 1973 to consist of the old McKown gravestones. McKowns
were moved in 1865 to Prospect Hill cemetery from
the family plot in McKownville. At that time, Alida McKown owned
this farmhouse, although she and her husband James A McKown had
been living in the City of Albany since 1856.
The part of lot 1 containing the farmhouse was separated by the
sale of the main part of lot 1 (containing the tavern) to Strope
in 1870. John Newman purchased this separated part containing the
farmhouse in 1874. He later obtained lots 2 and 3 in the
bankruptcy sale of 1894.
