lot 11 of parcel 1 of the 1807 Gore - "Amsdell lot"
The house located at 1188 Western Avenue was built in a 19.3 acre lot allocated by partition in 1807, in a triangular strip called the Gore released by the relocation in 1800 of the south boundary of the City of Albany. In the recitation for the sale of an adjacent lot in 1860, this statement is included:
"...part of [a] large tract of land conveyed by Stephen Van Rensselaer of the County of Albany to the proprietors of Van Balens Patent situate in the Town of Guilderland on both sides of the Great Western Turnpike and in the first parcel of a certain tract of land commonly called the Gore which said Gore was subdivided and set apart by Benjamin Gilbert, John D. P. Dow, Charles R. Webster, Commissioners appointed by the Supreme Court for that purpose in the year 1807..."
Our search of the index of deeds compiled by the office of the Albany County Clerk has failed to find any deeds from the Commissioners original allocations in 1807. There are later deeds for some Gore lots sold by grantors who are recognizably those of the Van Bael Patent proprietors, mostly with names LaGrange, or Veeder. In the case of lot 11 of the first parcel of the Gore, the earliest deed we have identified gives James Gourlay and his wife as the grantors in 1821. How James Gourlay came by ownership of this property is unclear, as there is no earlier deed index record for James Gourlay as grantee that would match the property. A deed in 1848 for sale of a property adjoining it to the south and east, not itself in the Gore, contains an item in its boundary description which implies that a LaGrange may have been the original owner of lot 11.
