Hamilton Union Church Rectory entered on the NRHP 10 November 1982
Application file # 4; National Register Guilderland Multiple
Resource Area # 18.
Once part of the Hamlet of Hamiltonville, the house is set back from
heavily travelled U.S. Route 20.
Features: Unaltered Greek Revival style design, three bays
wide with Doric pilaster between, classic recessed door with side
lights and transoms; 6/6 windows on first floor, small 3/6 windows
on second floor; there is a one-story ell on the east side; stone
foundation.
Date of initial construction: 1857.
Historical and Architectural importance: This excellent,
surviving Greek Revival style design was originally constructed as
the rectory for nearby Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church. The first
pastor to occupy the house was Rev. W. Fothingham who wrote the
histories of Montgomery & Fulton Counties. It is the best
example of "temple" design in the town. An adaptation of the classic
Greek temple, the Greek Revival style was a popular mode of design
in the mid-nineteenth century for modest scaled country residences
such as this. The building is set back from a major traffic artery,
U.S. Route 20, and survives substantially intact amidst modern
suburban development. Both the interior and exterior of the building
remain largely unaltered.
