Adam Hilton House entered on the NRHP 10 November 1982
Application file # 35; National Register Guilderland Multiple
Resource Area # 33.
Located near the base of the Helderberg escarpment with an excellent
view of Altamont and the area east. The original farm setting has
been maintained.
Features: Substantial two-story stone farmhouse; five bays
wide with gable roof, walls are random coursed ashlar with stone
lintels and sills. The wooden addition on the north and front
portico were added ca. 1860. The interior remains basically intact.
Date of initial construction: ca. 1800
Historical and Architectural importance: This large,
cut-stone farmhouse was buillt around 1800 for Adam Hilton, an early
settler to this area. The house has been well preserved and is one
of the few stone houses in Albany County. It is the only building of
its type in Guilderland. The building's front portico with lattice
supports is unique to this area and was probably made popular by a
local craftsman. Located in an area upon which modern suburban
development is encroaching, the building stands out as a significant
stone, vernacular structure of the early nineteenth century.
