Jacob Crounse Inn entered on the NRHP 10 November 1982
Application file # 28; National Register Guilderland Multiple Resource Area # 5.
This area along Rte. 146 was the center of the hamlet of Knowersville (now Altamont). Other buildings are located adjacent to the inn.
Features: The original building was rectangular in plan with a gable roof. Around 1870 the inn was enlarged slightly by adding a center gable wing on the front and a one-story porch. Porch has squared columns and hipped roof; a large, square, windowed cupola is at the intersection of the gables.
Date of initial construction: ca. 1833.
Historical and Architectural importance: This large inn was built for Jacob Crounse in the 1830's and was a very popular stopping place for travellers on the Schoharie Turnpike. Stage coaches would change their horses here so the inn was a center of activity. Although the building has been used as a residence for over fifty years, the house retains the ambience of the old inn. The Crounse family was one of the earliest to settle this area and was very active in the politics of the town. The building retains significant architectural features such as a large square cupola and square porch columns of the Doric order. The building survives intact amidst modern suburban development and is particularly important relative to this surrounding.
